5 ways to use upholstery foam to revamp your home

Upholstery foam is one of the most versatile materials in the home. It's soft and comfortable, yet sturdy enough to hold up over time. Upholstery foam is easy to cut into shape and customize for your needs, and it can be used on almost any part of your home—from sofas to window seats. Here are five ways to use upholstery foam:

Seat cushions for chairs and sofas

For those who want to revamp their furniture, upholstery foam is a great choice. Padding the seat cushions of chairs and sofas can help extend their lifespan and increase comfort. Upholstery foam provides support while allowing you to sit back with ease.

It’s also easy to cut and shape upholstery foam into custom shapes, which makes it easy to remake old cushions or craft completely new ones from scratch. With this material at your disposal, there’s no reason your furniture should lack comfort!

Dining Chair Seating Pads

This is a super easy upholstery project and can be done with no prior upholstery or sewing experience. If you have a dining room, chances are you have one or more tall dining chairs. You can easily make a seat cushion for these chairs with a piece of upholstery foam and some fabric or vinyl. Cut the foam to fit around the seat of your chair, leaving about an inch extra on each end. Measure the length of your chair's seat and add 1/2" to that measurement so that you can wrap the fabric around it securely.

To attach the fabric to the foam, use spray adhesive according to manufacturer instructions and glue it onto one side of each piece (the bottom side). Fold over any extra material at each end so that all edges are even, then glue down again until it's firmly in place. Repeat this process for all four sides of your seating pad before flipping over to glue down two ends together with no overlap in between; let dry overnight before using.

Outdoor seat cushions

Outdoor seat cushions are a great way to give your outdoor furniture an upgrade. They're easy to make, and can be made in any size to fit your particular piece of furniture. You can also use them indoors with waterproof covers so that they'll last all year long.

With the foam in hand, it's time to cut out the shapes you need. You may need some help with this part if you don't have a lot of experience working with foam. A good rule of thumb is that whatever shape you want should be 1 inch larger than the actual cushion itself—this leaves room for seams when sewing upholstery fabric around them later on down the road (or today!).

Use it as a window Seat

Use foam to create a window bench

Window seating is one of the best ways to add comfort and style to your living room. If you're looking for an easy way to create this look in your home, try using upholstery-grade foam as a place for guests and family members to sit while they admire their surroundings. The best part is that you can use any colour or patterned fabric you want—try mixing it up by going with something bright!

Try out different shapes

While most people will probably be familiar with simple benches, there are lots of other shapes that work well for window seating: try creating a L-shaped design for those who like sitting on both sides of the window seat; or if you have enough space in your room, opt instead for an octagonal shape (which works well when there's another object next to it).

Upholstery foam can be used for a variety of home uses, but it can also be an eco-friendly way to re-use old items.
