Fabric Feature Friday - Teddy Boucle Upholstery Fabric

It’s fair to say Teddy Bouclé is having a moment. You may have noticed that this wonderfully soft and very on trend fabric has been making it’s way across most online and high street stores with it’s sumptuously soft texture and luxurious feel. Every week we will be choosing one very special fabric from our I Want Fabric Collection to should about in our Fabric Feature Friday - and this week, it’s Teddy’s Bouclé’s time to shine!

What is Teddy Boucleé?

Bouclé, is fabric that is woven or knitted with bouclé yarns. It’s formed from lots of different loops, some of which are large circlets and some are tiny curls. It is taken from the French name ‘bouclér’ which means to curl.

The fabric is generally formed using two strands, one needs to have tension applied and the other is kept untaught. It can be very difficult to produce Bouclé and the process can take up a lot of time - but the end result is always worth it. The ‘Teddy’ part of the name comes from the appearance of the fabric resembling the texture of a Teddy Bear.

It is commonly made from wool but can be made from a wide range of textures and blends.

This is absolutely stunning fabric that looks great as a statement piece in the home whether you choose to upholster an armchair or design a pair of fluffy pillows.

What does it feel like?

Expect the softest texture that really lets you get snug and cosy! If you’re upholstering, you’ll want to sink into it and never get up. It is incredibly comfortable to sit on and the texture is very pleasant on the skin - you won’t want to stop touching it.

From far away the texture looks bumpy, but up close it appears smoother. Basically it is the perfect combination of texture and appearance that you need for your craft project.

What can you use it for?

One of the most common ways to use Bouclé as mentioned before, is for cushions and sofa, our teddy boucle is also fire retardant to UK regulations so it's perfect for use in both commercial and domestic environments. As the fabric is very warm to wear, you can see why people also choose to buy bouclé in their homes to use as part of the furniture as a Teddy Sofa.

Bouclé also has a low liquid absorption, meaning if you have any spillages on that brand new bouclé upholstery, it can easily be fixed! Beautiful and simple to maintain.. Could you ask for more from a fabric?

Other uses for Bouclé can be for carpets, rugs, throws and blankets but can also be used for couture suiting.

What can you pair it with?

You’ll find the bouclé will work really well on objects with curved or round edges, like sofas and chairs, but also with white walls, cream carpets in a more neutral setting. If you can get yourself a black lamp, geometric black and white cushions with heaps of cheeseplants, you’ll be on to a bouclé winner.
